What is Frederick Stretch Therapy?

Updated: May 9, 2022

Also known as Fascial Stretch Therapy™.

Frederick Stretch Therapy, also known as Fascial Stretch Therapy™ (FST) is a science based, dynamic approach to improving multiplanar, multijoint, and rotational movement in the body. FST applies the techniques of PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) to bring bodies back into balance and proper function. The focus of FST is to painlessly improve the movement throughout the fascial nets, connective tissue and muscles, thus reducing adhesions and other limitations in the joints.

PNF dates back to the 1950's with neurophysiologist Herman Kabat who originally found it to be very effective with muscles to facilitate the natural stretch reflex to release the restrictions in the body. New research suggests that fascia also contains contractile properties. With this knowledge, PNF is now being applied to fascia as well.

Frederick Stretch Therapy / Fascial Stretch Therapy is a type of bodywork, usually performed by a licensed professional such as a physical therapist or massage therapist. FST is done on a massage/treatment table with stabilization straps which are used to anchor and properly position the client during specific angles of stretch. Once problematic areas are addressed and released, the client can expect to feel lighter movement, improved muscle recruitment, and reduced or eliminated pain and tightness.

Frederick Stretch Therapy / Fascial Stretch Therapy™ was created by Ann & Chris Frederick of the Stretch to Win Institute. It has been in use for over 25 years and is a part of recovery and wellness programs of elite level athletes worldwide. FST is one of the leading methods used to improve joint mobility and flexibility throughout the entire body. Recently, stretch therapy imposters have been saturating the industry claiming they practice Fascial Stretch Therapy. This is the reason the original FST method is now referred to as Frederick Stretch Therapy. Clients beware, not all stretch therapy is alike. Training in the industry differs significantly. Be sure to ask the important questions when booking your stretch appointments. Experience, training, techniques all matter for your safety and effectiveness of your sessions.
